Trail Mileage

Why do we need to report our trail mileage each year?

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources depends on organizations like the OHC to collect information on trail usage throughout the state.  Our trail system is dependant on use, but if you keep it's use a secret by  not telling the State of Ohio through this simple reporting mechanism, all trail riders suffer from less trail attention, and ultimately less funding.

Here are the statistics for Wood County OHC members and statewide OHC members trail mileage reported for 2002,  2003, and 2004:

Wood County

2004

(56 reporting)

Wood County

2003

(51 reporting)

Statewide

2003

(958 reporting)

Statewide

2002

State Parks and Forest 12,162 13,242 222,563 256,420
Public and Private 4,979 4,658 75,072 95,197
Out of State 2,170 1,603 67,656 72,625
Total 19,311 19,503 365,291 424,242

2003 was the lowest reporting year since 1998, and the first time the numbers had not increased.   Only 46 chapters out of 57 turned in mileage reports, with only 958 members out of 3,793.  This works out to be a 24% reporting percentage rate!  We need to make sure that everyone keeps track of miles ridden in 2005!
