The 10th Annual Hobo Stew  held at Van Buren State Park East Campground was a big success. The Horsemen's camp was full. Tom and Barb went over on Wednesday to start setting up. Steve and Karen O. were  already there camping since Monday. Patty, BJ, Ron and Randy came over Thursday to help set up Tents and Jerry brought Patty's camper Thursday night as he had to work Friday. Steve and Gene helped Tom and myself cut and haul the firewood that was needed for the cooking fire and main campfire in the center of the horsemen's camp. Thursday night and Friday people started to arrive and ride the wonderful dry trails we have. This year has been wonderful for the campground. We have improved the trails so there is not much mud to reckon with anymore and the dry summer helped.

All the activities were held on Saturday.
The Pumpkins for carving/painting were donated by Anderson's, Rob & Daphnae Bishop & Shafer's Produce, and many of the Wood County OHC members and members of The Friends of Van Buren State Park. The Pumpkin winners were Kevin 1st, Jarrod L. 2nd, and Cassie 3rd. Jeremy and Randy along with help of other members were in charge. The Judges were Dick and Judy Stephens.

The Halloween Parade was huge this year. Brian Grilliot (The Turtle) won in the 0-5 division, Layne Taylor (Little Red Riding Hood) won the 6-12 division, and Josh Gerschutz (Flag Boy) won the 13 and up division. The Judges for that were Jeannette Coon and Chondra Braun. That was a tough job. There were lots of prospective winners.

Clara P. headed up the Piñata with Judy, Andrea, Karen S., Clara N. and Gina as helpers. Lots of candy that was donated by the members of both the Horse council and the Friends was thrown in as the piñatas were broken open.
The Silent Auction was run by Patty and Connie again this year and ran without a hitch.
Clara P. and Ron did the cooking of  the  stew with lots of help. A big thanks to Arby's for donating the bowls, napkins and silverware.
Tom ran the Poker Run with Alex as winner and Brenda as second.
Andrea did the half and half. ( Who won??)

Rick was trail guide and took several out on trail that had not been to Van Buren before. All said they would come back.
There were prizes and candy galore. Ruth and Arlene donated many of the prizes.  My muck tub was full. No child went home empty handed. Everyone is a winner at our Hobo Stew!
Only one incident occurred and that was Jessica McGrain fell off her horse and broke her arm. It can happen when you ride these big horses and many times we fall off and only have a bruised ego for it. At last report she underwent surgery to set the arm and is home and ready to get back on that horse, but of course she can't!

The UPS misplaced our Hobo Stew Shirts but they are now on their way and the profit from the pre-ordered shirts will go to the Breast Cancer Fund.  The profits from the Stew Ride go to improve Van Buren State Park.
Big Thanks to everyone that made this event possible.
Hope to see you next year, and please, you family campers can come and join in on the fun too. It's not just for us horsemen!
